Interviews are edited for clarity.
Meet Jen S.
Jen is Fluid Truck’s legal counsel, and an all-around great time to be around. Keep reading to learn more about Jen and what it’s like to handle the legalese of a startup like ours.
What are you doing when you’re not working?
I have two kids and a cat named Sergio Gacia, so I'm usually shuffling them around. I’m a big water skier, golfer, and we love snow skiing. Traveling too!
Tell me more about your cat!
Sergio Garcia is named after the golfer and he's the greatest cat in the world! I'm not like a CAT LADY, but Sergio is pretty sweet.
Do you root for any sports teams?
I am a Broncos and a Cowboys fan, but now I'm a Bills fan because my favorite player from the Cowboys got traded. Bills number one! Cole Beasley is my favorite player. He's like Rudy, he works so hard. And I always root for the short players!
What is your favorite part about working for Fluid Truck?
I love my job! I love what I do. I think my favorite part is finding creative solutions to enable the business and help us avert risk. I love all the new avenues and challenges, since we're so disruptive. We always live in the gray so I love finding creative solutions to keep our business moving forward when there's very little clarity. I love newness and constant challenges!. And I love our people! The team we've built is so special. It's a culture that I've never had the privilege to work for before. There's something special about this team.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
When I was a file clerk in law school, the office manager of the firm said, “So long as you're willing to work hard and try anything, you'll always succeed.” You'll constantly learn and you'll stay humble, and people will keep giving you more. If you're willing to take on any task, you'll keep getting more and more. Stay humble and be open to do anything to help. Also, in business, always try to be a facilitator instead of a roadblock.
Do you have a favorite quote from a book, movie, or TV show?
I’ve got a couple - "everything's coming up Millhouse" - but you put your own name in there! Like, "everything's coming up Jen!" Or Anthony Hopkins in Legends of the Fall saying “screw ‘em!”
If you were to speak at a TED Talk, what would it be about?
"Never let the fact that you're a woman scare you away from doing kickass shit and taking leadership positions. Especially in male-dominated industries!"
Do you have any hidden talents?
Gift giving.
Tell me about your hobbies?
Shopping and waterskiing! I try to pick two new sports a year to learn. I’ve done random stuff like pickleball and snowshoeing. Nordic skiing and aikido are on the list for 2021. Maybe fencing?
