What’s your favorite part of your job?
The easy answer is that it's not boring. Every day is different. We're doing the same things over and over, but it's different every time. I'm one of those people who, if I was sitting at a desk, I wouldn't like it that much. Every day is a different day and that’s my favorite part.
When you aren’t working, what are you usually doing?
Family time! My kids are older, lately it's been all the senior stuff like prom. My son is trying to get a track scholarship, and I have two daughters in college. When they come home, I just want to be around them and hang out with them. Soon they'll be on their own, so I like to spend as much time with them as possible.
I texted one of my daughters this morning [April 19th, the release date of Taylor Swift’s most recent album], "Happy Taylor Day!"
I learned a long time ago with the girls that the odds of them liking what I like are not high... so I've had to adapt to that, and being a Swiftie is part of that! When Taylor Swift came to Houston, I was 12th in line for merch at 5am so my daughter could get some. You’ve gotta do the little things like that!
Tell us about your pets!
We have a golden doodle named Harley. She's black, but she's a golden doodle. Harley runs the house!
Do you have any secret talents?
I can wiggle my ears... AndI have useless song lyrics in my head. I used to work at a CD store, and people would come in and ask me, “do you know the song that goes ‘la la la…’”– People would come in and sing lyrics and I’d try to find the record for them.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
As corny as it sounds, at the end of the day, just love what you do. If you go to work every day and it feels like work, odds are you may be in the wrong place. But if it doesn't feel like work, that's the right place. Figure out what you like and go for it. I've had jobs where I didn't like what i'm doing and it was miserable.
If you could have a Fluid Truck full of one thing, what would it be?
My one vice is hats. I buy lots of baseball hats. My most prized hat is a blue Astros hat, it's pink and orange and different colors, and now you can't find it anymore. It sells for like $300 on E-bay.
What’s your favorite snack?
Beef jerky from Buc-ee’s.
Do you have a favorite song lyric?
"Stop! Collaborate and listen!" I say that to my kids to get their attention.
What motivates you at work?
The idea that was there when I started–– helping grow, evolve, take over the world, and go public one day–– really really succeed. I want to be a belt to look back and be like, “I was a part of that!”
If you had a TED Talk, what would it be about?
Something sports related. Probably about baseball. When I was in highschool i was a bat boy for the Astros, and I worked in the visitors clubhouse. So I'd wear the visitor's uniform and collect their bats. I have tons of behind the scenes stories about how the clubhouse work. It's amazing when you see your heroes out on the field, and they go down to the tunnel and you walk back and they're smoking a cigarette. I know all the ins and outs of the Astrodome. There were lots of cats! I have the lineup card for the last game that Nolan Ryan ever pitched as an Astro.
Do you have a guilty pleasure?
I have a sweet tooth... so probably Oreos.
What would you tell someone who wants to come work at Fluid Truck?
It is a growing company. It's evolving, and if you like fast-paced, if you like days like I described where everything is different, then this is the perfect company for you.
